# Follow each claim back to the record

The guide starts with the approved label, then checks FDA and CDC records. Commercial listings appear only as unnamed price observations.

## Primary records

- [Approved bacteriostatic water label on DailyMed](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/services/v2/spls/87d6e9dc-fe3b-4593-ac9a-d7493d1959c7.xml) — description, uses, storage, newborn warning, and the direction to follow the other medicine's label.
- [Drugs@FDA application record](https://api.fda.gov/drug/drugsfda.json?search=application_number:%22NDA018802%22) — approval and prescription marketing status for NDA 018802.
- [FDA guide to the NDC Directory](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-approvals-and-databases/national-drug-code-directory) — why an NDC number alone does not prove approval.
- [CDC multi-dose vial guidance](https://www.cdc.gov/injection-safety/hcp/clinical-safety/index.html) — dating, discard timing, and keeping a vial to one patient where possible.
- [CDC safe injection practices](https://www.cdc.gov/injection-safety/hcp/clinical-guidance/index.html) — clean preparation and sterile equipment.
- [CDC report on neonatal deaths linked to benzyl alcohol](https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001109.htm) — the record behind the newborn warning. It concerns preserved saline, not bacteriostatic water.
- [FDA shortage data](https://api.fda.gov/drug/shortages.json?search=bacteriostatic&limit=10) — current shortage and limited availability.
- [Federal pharmacy acquisition-cost file](https://download.medicaid.gov/data/nadac-national-average-drug-acquisition-cost-09-16-2026.csv) — the benchmark used to separate wholesale acquisition from consumer cash prices.
- [FDA recall data](https://api.fda.gov/drug/enforcement.json?search=product_description:%22bacteriostatic+water%22&limit=50) — recalls, most tied to a lack of proof of sterility.
- [FDA warning-letter search](https://www.fda.gov/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations/compliance-actions-and-activities/warning-letters) — online enforcement involving injectable products and “research use only” notices.

## Plain terms

- **Bacteriostatic:** Holds bacterial growth back. It does not mean sterile or self-cleaning.
- **Nonpyrogenic:** Free of bacterial residue that can cause fever when it reaches the blood.
- **Multiple-dose vial:** A bottle made to be entered more than once.
- **Beyond-use date:** The shorter clock that begins when a container is first entered.
- **NDC number:** A US product number that helps with a lookup but does not prove approval.
- **NDA:** The FDA application that holds a medicine's approval. The approved bacteriostatic water product points to NDA 018802.

## Limits

No general source can decide the liquid or amount for a particular medicine. That answer stays with the medicine's current label and a pharmacist or prescriber.

Approval listings, shortage status, recall status, and prices need a fresh check before a personal decision.
